10 Things to Do Before Your Rhinoplasty: A Pre-Op Checklist

Quick Answer

The four weeks before surgery determine how smoothly you recover. Stop smoking and vaping for at least 4 weeks, stop blood-thinning medications and supplements 1–2 weeks ahead, eat protein-rich meals, hydrate, take pre-op photos, plan transportation, block 7–10 days of downtime, and confirm everything with your clinic in writing. The goal of the pre-op week is “boring”: no new diets, no new supplements, no extreme workouts.

The four weeks before your rhinoplasty are when you set yourself up for the smoothest possible recovery. The work isn't dramatic — but each item below genuinely matters. Use this as your countdown checklist.

1. Stop smoking and vaping (4 weeks before, minimum)

Nicotine constricts blood vessels and dramatically slows healing. The skin envelope of the nose is especially vulnerable. Most surgeons will reschedule surgery if they detect smoking. Vaping is not “safer” for this purpose.

2. Stop blood thinners (1–2 weeks before)

Aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo, ginger supplements, and many herbal teas thin blood and increase bruising. Your surgeon will give you a precise list with dates.

3. Stabilize alcohol (2 weeks before)

Heavy drinking impairs healing and interacts with anesthesia. Cut to zero in the week before surgery.

4. Eat well

Increase protein intake (your tissue needs amino acids to heal), iron-rich foods (your hemoglobin matters), and stay hydrated. Avoid crash diets in the run-up.

5. Arrange your post-op kit

Your surgeon will give you most of what you need, but stock at home: paracetamol, saline spray, gauze, an extra pillow, button-up shirts (so you don't pull anything over your head), and a thermometer.

6. Plan transportation and a chaperone

You cannot drive home from surgery. International patients should have a clinic transfer; local patients need a friend or family member.

7. Take your pre-op photos

You'll forget what your “before” looked like. Take front, side, three-quarter, and base views in good light. You'll thank yourself at month six.

8. Prepare your work and social calendar

Block 7–10 days of complete downtime. Avoid major events for the first three weeks. Most patients underestimate how much rest they actually want in the first week.

9. Mental preparation

Read realistic recovery accounts (not “before/after” highlight reels). The first week looks worse before it looks better. Knowing this in advance reduces anxiety significantly.

10. Confirm everything in writing

Surgery date, technique, what's included in the package, what to bring to the hospital, emergency phone numbers, and your post-op appointments. International patients should also confirm hotel and transfer logistics 48 hours before flying.

A boring pre-op week is the goal. No new diets, no new supplements, no extreme workouts. Just sleep, hydration, and a quiet body ready to heal.

Yes. Many herbal supplements thin blood or interact with anesthesia.

Loose button-up clothes, toothbrush, phone charger, your medications list, and a book or tablet.
