Sleeping, Eating & Exercise After Rhinoplasty: Patient FAQ
Side sleeping is cleared at week 3, stomach sleeping at week 6. Light walks from day 2; cardio at week 3; weight lifting at week 6; contact sports at week 8–12. No glasses on the bridge for 6 weeks. No swimming for 4 weeks (pool) or 6 weeks (sea). Eat soft, protein-rich meals in week 1; resume normal eating from week 2 with moderate sodium. Most importantly: respect the timeline.
The most-Googled rhinoplasty questions are not about surgery — they're about ordinary life afterwards. Here are honest answers to the questions patients ask most.
When can I sleep on my side?
Most surgeons clear side-sleeping around week 3, and stomach-sleeping around week 6. Sleeping on the side too early can twist the healing bone work and cause asymmetry. If you're a chronic side-sleeper, build a small wall of pillows around you to keep yourself on your back.
When can I blow my nose?
Not for at least two weeks, and only gently after that. Blowing the nose forces air through delicate healing tissues and can cause bleeding. Sneeze with your mouth open. Use saline rinses for congestion.
When can I exercise?
- Day 2: Light walks.
- Week 3: Stationary bike, easy treadmill.
- Week 4: Moderate cardio and yoga (avoiding inversions).
- Week 6: Lifting and HIIT.
- Week 8–12: Contact sports, boxing, martial arts.
Can I have sex?
Realistically, week 2–3 is fine for most patients. Avoid positions that increase pressure in the head/face for the first two weeks. If something hurts, stop.
When can I drink alcohol?
Wait at least two weeks, ideally four. Alcohol increases swelling, interacts with prescribed medications and slows healing.
What should I eat?
Soft, protein-rich foods in the first week — eggs, yogurt, smoothies, soups. Anything that requires significant chewing strains the upper lip and indirectly the nose. From week two, return to normal eating; just keep sodium moderate.
Can I wear glasses?
No glasses on the bridge of the nose for six weeks. Use contact lenses, or tape glasses to the forehead with surgical tape. Sunglasses included.
Can I fly?
Most surgeons clear short-haul flying from day 8. Cabin pressure shouldn't damage the nose; just avoid anyone bumping you on the plane.
Can I go swimming?
Pool: week 4 minimum. Sea: week 6. Hot tubs: avoid for 6 weeks (heat plus chlorine).
When can I see a result I love?
Glimpses at month 1. Real shape at month 3. The version of your nose your friends will compliment: month 6. The final result: month 12 (and up to month 18 for thick-skinned patients).
The body has its own clock. The patients who do best are the ones who respect the timeline rather than rushing it.
