Life After Rhinoplasty — Patient FAQ
Practical answers on sleeping position, exercise, eating, glasses, flying and swimming after rhinoplasty, drawn from real patient questions.
Side sleeping is generally cleared at week 3, stomach sleeping at week 6. Light walks can begin day 2, cardio at week 3, weight lifting at week 6, and contact sports at week 8–12. No glasses should rest on the bridge for 6 weeks. Swimming pools should wait 4 weeks and the sea 6 weeks. Soft, protein-rich meals are best in week 1, with normal eating and moderate sodium from week 2.
When Can I Sleep on My Side?
Side sleeping at week 3, stomach sleeping at week 6. A pillow-wall trick can help prevent rolling over too early.
When Can I Blow My Nose?
Not for at least 2 weeks. After that, blow gently, sneeze with the mouth open, and use saline rinses to help clear congestion.
When Can I Exercise?
- Day 2: light walks.
- Week 3: stationary bike or easy treadmill.
- Week 4: moderate cardio and yoga (avoiding inversions).
- Week 6: lifting and HIIT.
- Weeks 8–12: contact sports, boxing and martial arts.
Can I Have Sex?
Generally fine for most patients from week 2–3. Positions that increase pressure in the head or face should be avoided in the first 2 weeks.
When Can I Drink Alcohol?
Wait at least 2 weeks, ideally 4.
What Should I Eat?
Soft, protein-rich foods in week 1 — eggs, yogurt, smoothies, soups. Normal eating resumes in week 2, with moderate sodium intake.
Can I Wear Glasses?
No glasses resting on the bridge for 6 weeks. Contacts, or taping glasses to the forehead, are good alternatives.
Can I Fly?
Short-haul flights are typically cleared from day 8.
Can I Go Swimming?
Pools from week 4 at the earliest, the sea from week 6. Hot tubs should be avoided for 6 weeks.
When Can I See a Result I Love?
Glimpses appear around month 1, the real shape by month 3, compliment-worthy results by month 6, and the final result by month 12 — or 18 months in thick-skinned patients.
