What is lip refinement?

Lip refinement enhances volume, shape, symmetry and definition, always in proportion with your face. At Dr. Havva Duru İpek's Nişantaşı clinic, every lip treatment is tailored to your lip anatomy, facial proportions and aesthetic goals, using premium hyaluronic acid fillers and a harmony-first philosophy.

What it does and doesn't do

Russian lip technique. Focuses on lifting the Cupid's bow and creating a flatter, more elevated lip profile rather than all-over plumpness. Filler is placed vertically into the body of the lip to create height, definition, and a heart-shaped appearance. Ideal for patients who want a structured, defined look without a projected or overfilled appearance.

Standard / classic lip filler. The traditional approach, adding volume evenly throughout the lips for a fuller, softer, more plump result. Customisable from a very subtle, hydrating half-syringe treatment to a more noticeable full enhancement, all while maintaining natural proportion.

Lip flip (Botox). A non-filler alternative for patients who want a subtle improvement to the upper lip without adding volume. A small amount of Botox relaxes the orbicularis oris muscle, causing the upper lip to gently roll outward, creating the appearance of a fuller lip without any filler. Particularly effective for patients with a "disappearing" upper lip when smiling.

Keyhole pout. A targeted technique that places a small amount of filler at the centre of the upper lip to create a defined central "keyhole" opening, adding shape and allure without significantly increasing overall volume.

Cherry lips technique. Focused on creating a youthful, rounded, full centre-lip appearance reminiscent of a classic, natural pout.

Who is it for?

Half a syringe (0.5ml) is a popular first-time choice for patients new to lip filler wanting subtle hydration, border refinement, or minor asymmetry correction. The lip flip suits patients with a "disappearing" upper lip when smiling who want improvement without added volume. The Russian technique suits patients wanting a structured, defined look without an overfilled appearance. Many patients combine lip refinement with cheek enhancement or jawline treatment for a complete lower and midface harmony result.

Procedure process

Every lip treatment is tailored to lip anatomy, facial proportions, and aesthetic goals during consultation. Filler is placed according to the chosen technique: vertically for the Russian method, evenly throughout for classic filler, centrally for the keyhole pout or cherry lips, or as Botox into the orbicularis oris muscle for the lip flip. Starting with a half syringe (0.5ml) is an accessible entry point; a full syringe (1ml) is the standard for more noticeable enhancement.

After the procedure

Minor firmness in the first few days is normal as the filler settles; lips feel completely soft, smooth, and natural once fully healed, typically within 2 weeks. We advise avoiding straws, hot liquids, kissing, and lip makeup for at least 24 hours after treatment, to prevent infection risk and avoid unnecessary pressure on the newly placed filler while it integrates.

Risks

Minor firmness in the first few days is a normal, expected side effect as filler settles. Avoiding straws, hot liquids, kissing, and lip makeup for the first 24 hours reduces infection risk. For patients with old or migrated filler, dissolving and refilling on the same day is not safe practice; a minimum wait of 1-2 weeks between dissolving and re-injecting is required for the tissue to fully heal and settle before new filler is placed.

Related procedures

Lip refinement is frequently combined with cheek enhancement and jawline contouring for a complete lower and midface result.

Frequently asked questions

Does lip filler hurt?

Lip filler is made as comfortable as possible. Premium fillers contain lidocaine (a built-in local anaesthetic), and medical-grade topical numbing cream is applied beforehand. Most patients describe feeling mild pressure rather than pain.

Can I get just half a syringe?

Absolutely. Starting with half a syringe (0.5ml) is an excellent way to add subtle hydration, refine the border, or correct minor asymmetry without any dramatic volume change. It is a popular first-time choice for patients new to lip filler.

Will my lips feel lumpy after the treatment?

Minor firmness in the first few days is normal as the filler settles. When injected by a trained specialist using premium products and correct technique, lips feel completely soft, smooth, and natural once fully healed, typically within 2 weeks.

How soon can I drink from a straw or apply lipstick?

We advise avoiding straws, hot liquids, kissing, and lip makeup for at least 24 hours after treatment. This prevents infection risk and avoids any unnecessary pressure on the newly placed filler while it integrates.

Can you dissolve my old, migrated filler and refill on the same day?

No — and any clinic that offers same-day dissolution and refill is not following safe practice. We dissolve first and wait a minimum of 1-2 weeks for the tissues to fully heal and settle before carefully injecting new filler. This protocol ensures the safest outcome and the best possible result.
