Rhinoplasty Recovery Timeline
A week-by-week guide to rhinoplasty recovery — from surgery day to the final result at 12–18 months — by Dr. Havva Duru İpek.
Surgery itself takes 2–3 hours, but full healing takes a year. The cast comes off day 7; bruising fades by day 10; most patients are socially presentable by week 2; light cardio resumes by week 3; full activity returns by week 6; the bridge looks beautiful by month 3; and the tip continues to refine through month 12 — up to 18 months in thicker-skinned patients.
Day 0 — Surgery Day
The surgery itself typically takes 2–3 hours under general anesthesia. A splint is placed, along with internal splints, and mild to moderate pain is well managed with paracetamol.
Days 1–3 — Peak Swelling
Swelling and bruising peak around day 2–3. Mouth breathing is common in this period; cold compresses and saline rinses help manage the discomfort.
Day 7 — Cast Off
The nose looks swollen, slightly upturned and stiff when the cast comes off, but most bruising has faded by this point. Many patients fly home around day 8.
Weeks 2–3 — Back to Social Life
By this stage most patients are presentable without makeup and can manage light desk work. No glasses should rest on the bridge for 6 weeks.
Weeks 4–6 — Back to Most Activity
Light cardio can resume around week 4, while heavy lifting and contact sports should wait until week 6. The nose can still feel stuffy during this period.
Months 3–6 — Refining
By this point, 70–80% of the swelling has resolved. The bridge is settling into shape, though the tip remains firm.
Months 6–12 — Final Result
The last 20% of swelling resolves during this stage, mostly in the tip. The nose continues to refine through month 12, and up to 18 months in patients with thicker skin.
